The story behind the show

It’s a conversation we all have in the clubhouse. “Where is your favourite course? Which is your favourite hole?” But it just so happened that this conversation was at Wentworth with former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley. He’s played all over the world in some of the biggest tournaments and designed a few courses too. So, he should know!

So, he started plotting this golfing expedition and they had anywhere in the world to begin their journey but just like his career he wanted to start in the island of Ireland. And what a journey it turned out to be. From the most northern spot of the island of Ireland, Donegal, south to Kinsale, as far west as Belmullet and East as Downpatrick.

Following the success of Series 1, the pair headed to Paul's "home from home" in mainland Europe - Portugal. Each episode featured holes selected by Paul for their framing, architecture, and natural beauty. From the rugged terrain of Porto in the north to the sun-drenched coastal playground of the Algarve, Golf's Greatest Holes Series 2 offered an immersive tour of Portugal’s diverse championship-quality courses. Series 3 returned to the Emerald Isle for an unforgettable journey around Royal Portrush, host of the 153rd Open, showcasing all 18 holes with insights from local favourites Darren Clarke and James Nesbitt.

In the latest Series, Chris and Paul travel to Scotland to explore some of the game’s most iconic courses and discover the holes that truly define the sport - Golf's Greatest Holes is back!

Episode Previews - Series 4

The episode explores Scotland, the historic home of golf, beginning at the famous Old Course at St Andrews. Paul McGinley and Chris Hollins tackle the iconic 18th hole despite challenging weather, discussing its history, the Swilcan Bridge, and the clubhouse clock often used as an aiming point. They reflect on the course’s legendary status, including Jack Nicklaus’s final Open Championship appearance. Chris then travels north to Cabot Highlands near Inverness, playing Castle Stuart with four-time major champion Dame Laura Davies. They discuss strategy on a downhill par-four while enjoying the scenic Highlands, and Davies shares stories of learning golf by watching professionals on TV and practicing without a coach. Chris also visits Trump Turnberry, among other highlights this series.

Episode 2

Episode Two begins at Trump International near Aberdeen, where Chris Hollins and Dame Laura Davies play a round while reflecting on her remarkable career. Chris then heads to Kingsbarns, joining Paul McGinley to explore the course’s stunning coastal setting, thoughtful design, and accessibility as they play.

The journey continues to Trump Turnberry’s iconic Ailsa course, where Chris meets Colin Montgomerie. The pair enjoy a round together, sharing insights on the course, their playing styles, and the game itself, before finishing the day off the course with a relaxed chat and a celebratory dram.

Episode 3

Episode Three begins at Trump Turnberry under clear skies, where Chris debates his favourite hole and takes on the 11th by the water. He then heads to Muirfield with Paul McGinley to tackle the 13th in fierce winds, with shots struggling to stay on line. The journey continues to Prestwick Golf Club with Colin Montgomerie, reflecting on the Open Championship’s origins there in 1860, as they take on the famous 17th hole and view the original Claret Jug and Challenge Belt while discussing the game’s history.

Chris then moves to Trump International Golf Links for the 10th hole with Dame Laura Davies, chatting about her competitive edge as they play. The episode closes back with Chris and Colin sharing a drink, reflecting on their day across some of Scotland’s most iconic courses.

Episode 4

Episode Four begins at Glen Golf Club on a windy day as Chris tackles the 13th hole. He then moves to Cabot Highlands at Castle Stuart, where he takes on the 18th hole alongside Dame Laura Davies, discussing her career from commentator to multiple title wins.

Next is Dumbarnie Links, where Chris plays the 1st hole against Paul McGinley’s advice to start at the 8th, taking in sweeping views of the Firth of Forth. At Western Gailes, under beautiful coastal weather, Chris faces the challenging 7th hole but manages to secure par near the beach. The journey continues to Trump Turnberry, where Chris plays the 9th hole with Colin Montgomerie, reflecting on the iconic links and the day’s challenge across Scotland’s coastline.

Episode 5

Remaining in Scotland, Chris begins at Cabot Highlands on the new Old Petty course, making its television debut beside Old Petty Church and a nearby historic castle. He then heads to Dumbarnie Links, the modern Clive Clark design, where a coastal breeze greets him on the 6th hole with sweeping sea views.

The journey continues to Muirfield, where Chris is joined by Paul McGinley to tackle the 18th in challenging winds, adding difficulty to the demanding finish. The episode then moves to Royal Troon, where Chris takes on the famous 8th hole, the “Postage Stamp,” aiming to avoid the dreaded Coffin Bunker on one of golf’s most iconic short holes.

Episode 6

Remaining in Scotland, Chris opens at The Renaissance Club, host of the Scottish Open, taking on a striking par 4 at one of the country’s premier championship venues. He then makes his way to Kingsbarns, reuniting with Paul McGinley for another coastal test before heading north to Trump International in Aberdeen, where the 12th offers a memorable par 3 against a glowing sunset.

The journey continues at Dundonald Links, where Chris switches gears for the 407 yard par 4 16th after a conversation with Dame Laura Davies on competition and golf for travel. The episode then returns to Royal Troon, where Chris is joined by Colin Montgomerie on the 18th.
